Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight: shit or hit? | Type: Internet Article |
| | Christina Aguilera - Not Myself Tonight: shit or hit? | Mar 31, 2010 |
Last time we checked in on Aguilera-land, she was busy wondering what gender Gaga was. Oops, big mistake Aggy. Following a four-year long creative process since her last studio album proper, Xtina’s back with new single Not Myself Tonight. The big question, as ever, remains: shit or hit? Hit see more for our verdict.
Since Aguilera gave up pretending to be an Andrews Sister circa Back to Basics and frankly just gave up on her Greatest Hits following the piss-poor misstep Keeps Getting Better, she’s been throwing us tantalising hints about possible collaborators for fourth studio album, Bionic; mentions of Sia, Ladytron, Goldfrapp, M.I.A., Santigold and Le Tigre have been enough to make even the highbrow pop fan wipe away a bit of drool. Sure enough, come the premiere of Not Myself Tonight and we see… absolutely no evidence of this leftfield wonky pop whatsoever.
Instead, Not Myself Tonight manages to sound both dated and like it’s desperately trying to leap on the Gaga bandwagon. Even whilst it’s still gripping frantically to the coat-tails of Justin’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, Britney post-Blackout, various uptempo Pussycat Dolls tracks and whatever other productions Danja or others of his ilk might have overseen recently. It wouldn’t sound out of place on the Sugababes’ Sweet 7 album. Damning praise indeed.
Of course, this isn’t a Christina Aguilera record until Christina has caterwauled over it. She duly provides. Sometimes, it’s exactly the burst of individuality a generic club-banger like this needs; at other times, it’s a case of Xtina overegging her pudding, as per usual.
The beats are there and yes, they’re predictably addictive and would probably sound great turned up so loud that your bones vibrate. It’s messy, it’s noisy and you’ll have more luck finding the Easter bunny than a tune in the verses. Is the alright-but-much-too-short chorus, which sees Aguilera’s voice soar ‘I’m not myself… I’m not the same girl’, reward enough? In an age where every song Gaga records is a game-changer, possibly not. In an age where Britney dirge like 3 can become number one in the States, maybe. Either way, so far we’re calling ‘shit’. Let’s hope the video is as amazingly good-humouredly slutty as the single cover and we just might think about changing our minds. |
