Although billed as a musical, Burlesque is probably best described as a number of video clips linked together by a really average storyline. It’s not without merit – a strong cast that includes Cher and Christina Aguilera with supporting performances by Alan Cumming, Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci and Kristen Bell. Unfortunately, the talented cast is wasted in this film.
In her movie debut, Christina Aguilera plays Ali, who leaves her small town life in search of the bright lights of a dingy Burlesque bar, owned by Tess (Cher). Ali gets a job as a waitress with thanks to the barman, Jack (Cam Gigandet). The movie chugs along from here with a predictable storyline and some truly cringeworthy dialogue. Some of the biggest laughs were during the more serious scenes.
There’s no doubt that Aguildera’s voice is exceptional, but this movie doesn’t challenge what we already know about her. Cher comes out of it all relatively unscathed too. For most of the film we’re watching to enormous talents battling with a half baked storyline whose script has not been given the attention it needs.

Burlesque’s outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.
Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal… |
